Inductions

Inductions Overview

Our chapter inducts a new group of engineering students every semester. At the beginning of each semester, we reach out to all eligible students and invite them to induct. The Fall induction cycle is currently closed, and the Spring induction cycle will begin in January 2024. If you have any questions about eligibility or the inductions cycle, please reach out to tbp-nc-alpha@ncsu.edu.

Eligibility
Eligibility for Tau Beta Pi is generally determined by class rank. Juniors are eligible if they are in the top 1/8th of the Junior engineering class, and Seniors are eligible if they are in the top 1/5th of the Senior engineering class. Graduate students are eligible if they have completed half of their coursework (including research) and receive a recommendation from their faculty advisor. Currently, we accept students from most of the engineering disciplines on campus. See below for a list of all eligible majors.

Chapter Specific Induction Requirements
In addition to the eligibility requirements described above, students must display exemplary character to be inducted into Tau Beta Pi. Each chapter has their own methods for assessing the character of initiates. Typically, character is evaluated over the course of a semester before students are formally elected to membership. In each semester’s induction cycle, inductees attend general body meetings, social events, and service events alongside current members of the chapter. The NC Alpha Chapter has the following requirements for initiates:

  • Attend 1 general body meeting
  • Attend 1 social event
  • Attend 1 service event
  • Pass a membership quiz on ethics and Tau Beta Pi history
  • Complete an interview with a member of the officer team
  • Complete a signature sheet (signatures serve as recommendations from student and faculty members of Tau Beta Pi)
  • Pay a one-time membership fee (covers lifetime membership)
  • Attend the induction ceremony

Membership Fee
All initiates of Tau Beta Pi are required to pay a one-time membership fee. The membership fee for the NC Alpha chapter is $90. A portion of this fee ($55) goes to the association and covers an engraved membership key, an official membership certificate, an official membership card, a four-year subscription to The Bent (Tau Beta Pi’s magazine), a copy of the constitution and bylaws, a national convention assessment fee, and general expenses of the association. A price breakdown can be found here. The rest of the fee ($35) covers chapter expenses, including the cost of food and materials at chapter events and graduation cords for active members.

Our chapter is able to provide financial assistance for students who are unable to pay the membership fee. If you are a current inductee, please email tbp-nc-alpha@ncsu.edu if you are concerned about paying your membership fee, and a member of the officer team will assist you.
