About Tau Beta Pi

Tau Beta Pi is the only engineering honor society that represents the entire engineering profession. Tau Beta Pi recognizes “those who have conferred honor upon their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as students in engineering, or by their achievements as alumni in the field of engineering.” Tau Beta Pi aims to foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges.

Founded at Lehigh University in 1885, Tau Beta Pi is the nation’s second-oldest honor society. There are currently 255 active chapters of Tau Beta Pi at colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. There are 50 alumni chapters of Tau Beta Pi in the country, and Tau Beta Pi has a current membership of 635,563. For more information, please see Tau Beta Pi’s website.

About the NC Alpha Chapter

The NC Alpha Chapter (NC State University) is proud to have initated 6,355 members since our establishment in 1925. 15 members of NC Alpha have earned Tau Beta Pi scholarships, and 18 members of NC Alpha have earned Tau Beta Pi fellowships to support their graduate studies.

Currently, our chapter has approximately 85 members. 74 faculty members at NC State are Tau Bates, and the Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Jim Pfaendtner, is a Tau Bate. Our chapter regularly partners with the RTP (Research Triangle Park) Alumni Chapter.
